Digital Web Books with DRM
and Editable Image fields

All-in-one DRM and
e-commerce solution for electronic publications, and
Software that makes
software (without programming)
Sydney, Australia -
June 2004 – DNAml PTY LIMITED
(DNAml) - DNAml continues to lead
innovation in the field of electronic publishing with the release
of Digital Rights Management (DRM) and Editable Image field
features for Digital Web Books.
Digital Rights Management
(DRM)
A long-standing problem of
publishing in electronic format has been the inability to raise
revenue from content distribution. The new DRM feature for
Digital Web Books (DWBs) provides a unique and compelling solution
to this problem by integrating lock-down and electronic payment
capability within the DNL Reader (description below).
Publishers using the DWB
format may now elicit payment for content viewing at their
discretion, allowing users to preview a set amount of content prior
to being prompted to submit their credit card details.
Restrictions determined by
the publisher may be based upon limiting the number of pages a user
may view or the number of Editable image fields a user may interact
with. These restrictions relate to different applications of
the DWB format. For example, restricting the number of pages
a user may view may be applied to eBook publishing, whereas,
restrictions relating to Editable image fields may be best suited
to the publishing of digital photo albums and scrapbooks.
Users only need enter the
relevant details and wait for their transaction to complete.
Once their payment is approved the DWB is unlocked and may be
viewed by the user in its entirety. The unlocked DWB may only
be viewed on the machine upon which it was unlocked and if passed
on will require payment from successive users.
The purchase process is
similar to traditional browser-based shopping carts and uses 128
bit encryption with SSL for security.
The DRM solution for DWBs is
seamlessly incorporated within a fully integrated ecommerce system. Publishers are not
required to have a bank-approved merchant facility.
Publishers are relieved of
the burden of running such a system and simply need to concentrate
on distributing their publications. The platform comprises
multi-currency credit card acceptance and real-time sales tracking,
together with a web-based administration tool and affiliate
program.
The partnership between DNAml
and DRM, sees the marriage of a leading-edge electronic
publishing solution with proven security technology. The
combination of DRM with an internal payment gateway is a world
first for stand-alone documents. For further details please

Editable image
fields
The new Editable image field
feature allows publishers to create DWBs with image fields that can
be used by recipients of the documents. Upon receiving a DWB,
a user can click on a button and enter an image of their choice
into the relevant field. They can then opt to leave the field
open for further editing or lock it. Once the field is locked
it can no longer be edited. Changes may also be saved,
allowing the user to return to the document from time to time to
make other changes.
Remarkably, users can also
carry out a variety of editing functions within the image
fields. These may be broadly categorised as
“fit”, “zoom”, “optimise” and
“lock” functions. There are 16 functions in total
and these are activated using the right-mouse button. This
new feature brings a range of simple yet powerful functions to the
editing of documents which would normally be associated with full
software packages.
A powerful
combination
The DRM and Editable Image
field features combined, create a powerful tool set that can enable
graphic designers to generate revenue. Previously it has been
difficult for designers to ensure that their creative work is
protected and paid for when published electronically.
With these new features
designers can, as a for instance, create digital photo albums for
sale over the internet. This is made possible without the
requirement for any programming skills and is akin to creating
software.
DNAml believes that this
advance in technology will assist it in its aim to make the DWB
format the publishing standard for the digital photography
market.
New interface
In addition to the DRM and
Editable image field features, the new version of DeskTopAuthor
(DTA) has a new user interface. This incorporates a ruler,
gridlines and moveable toolbar and image browser.
What are Digital Web
Books?
The inexpensive and
easy-to-use DeskTop Author package produces documents of small file
size that may be easily emailed, viewed within a browser, made
downloadable from a website or distributed on CD (or floppy
disk).
Digital Web Books are
packaged either as .EXE files, that can be viewed on PCs (Windows
98-XP) without a reader, or as .DNL files, that require the
installation of a small reader.
The DNL Reader may either be
installed using a stand-alone download or via a browser. With
the latter the installation process is simplified as the browser
detects whether the machine has the Reader and if not, prompts the
user to install (the stand-alone installation file may be
downloaded from the following link – www.digitalwebbooks.com/reader).
Users viewing DWBs, navigate
between pages rather like a physical book, using a simple point and
click method. Index links enable quick access to others pages
within the documents, while links to email and to websites,
encourage further viewer interactivity.
Examples of DWBs may be

How easy is it to create
Digital Web Books?
Zero programming experience
is assumed and authors with little PC experience and can get
started quickly with in-built templates and buttons. Fast
production of professional looking documents is assisted by
intuitive editing tools within the software. In addition to
extensive help resources within the package, users can further rely
on technical support via email.
